Date and Time: Wednesday May 18, 2016; 6-8pm

About the Gallery

The Dougherty Gallery started as Daniel Dougherty’s vision to contribute to Long Island City’s artistic community. The gallery space is now housed in Crescent Grill, a restaurant started by his brother, Chef Shaun Dougherty.  Diverse exhibitions are rotated several times a year, presenting well-known artists as well as emerging ones, with backgrounds ranging from local to international. The featured art also crosses a spectrum of media and styles, reinforcing the variety of LIC’s singular neighborhood.

PictureDan Dougherty

For as long as Dan Dougherty has lived in Long Island City, he has been collecting local art. In partnership with his brother Shaun, Dan intends for the gallery to be a catalyst of growth and recognition for local artists, specifically those in Long Island City whom he has honored for so long. The gallery stands out as a unique reflection of Dan’s time in New York, spanning the late eighties to the present day, and also as a symbol of his patronage to and appreciation of the local arts scene.

About Crescent Grill
Located in Long Island City, Crescent Grill is conveniently placed near several public transit lines and minutes away from Manhattan and features locally sourced and handpicked farm-to-table ingredients. Crescent Grill brings fresh seasonal food for an upscale yet relaxed dining experience.

crescent-grill-long-island-city

The building that Crescent Grill and The Dougherty Gallery share has unique local touches as well. The Dougherty brothers partnered with two prominent LIC residents to achieve this result. Orestes Gonzales, a renowned local photographer and designer, was hired for the architecture. Ignatius “Iggy” of LIC built and installed the overhanging light fixtures that are simultaneously reminiscent of a chandelier and rafters one might find in a barn. In Shaun Dougherty’s words, the design reflects “the old warehouse feel of LIC gantry… with the new modern feel of LIC. It offers a healthy mix of both.”
crescent-grill-long-island-cityShaun Dougherty
Chef Shaun Dougherty is the proprietor of Crescent Grill. Located in the Dutch Kills neighborhood of Long Island City, Queens, Crescent Grill is a farm-to-table restaurant focused on providing sustainable fare for New York’s residents and visitors alike. He previously worked in St, Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands where he specialized in both classical European fine dining as well as American-style pub food. While there Shaun learned “the most important skill” of his business practice: building relationships with local farmers and purveyors. In partnership with his brother Dan, a longtime LIC resident, Shaun Dougherty opened Crescent Grill in 2013, sourcing his ingredients from farms in the greater east coast region.

About the Artists

Artist Patrick Byrnes

Patrick Byrnes

Patrick was born in Busan, South Korea in 1984 and raised in La Grange, Illinois. He earned his undergraduate degree in Art History and English from the University of St Andrews in 2006, then began his fine art training at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He spent a year at the Florence Academy of Art, then moved to New York in 2010 to study under Jacob Collins at Grand Central Atelier. He graduated in May 2014, and currently lives and works in New York City.

Patrick’s immersion in the methodology, philosophy and studio practices of the classical atelier continues to inform and refine his technical skills, while his determination to evince the beauty, dignity and grace of the human form provides the inspiration for his work.

___

Artist Elinore Schurr

Elinore Schnurr

Elinore is a contemporary representational painter who focuses her work on the interaction of people with each other and the spaces that enclose them. Her studio is currently in Long Island City, Queens, New York. Over the years she has exhibited widely. Her paintings are in many museum collections, such as the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Smithsonian America Art Museum in Washington, D.C.; she has work in more than 50 corporate collections, such as Pfizer Inc. in New York City, and many important private collections in this country and abroad.

“My paintings have always been involved with people in urban spaces, but in different ways.  I wander the city sometimes, searching out the scene that will capture my imagination, with the intent to put it into my own visual language.  When I find something, I try to capture it with a sketch, or by using my camera as a sketchbook, and making a note to return another day with my pochade box or easel.  Most, but not all, of my paintings are of New York City and its incredible diversity.  I have been painting New York City since I arrived from Ohio 50 years ago; I never run out of inspiration.”

___

Artist Patrick Byrnes

Michael Serafino

Michael Serafino is a Brooklyn based emerging artist who makes paintings that reflect his myriad passions in experimental styles.  Michael was first connected to Long Island City through the studio of Tobi Kahn where he has worked since 2005.  Kahn has established his international career from his studio on Jackson Avenue where he has worked for over 25 years. Also located in the same studio, LIC artists Sharon Florin and Scott Williams, with whom Michael has assisted on several projects during his decade working professionally in Long Island City.
“As a painter, the continuous search for a subject allows me to engage my myriad passions, from physics and space exploration to music and fashion. While some artists seek fame or fortune, my ultimate goal is to make enough art worth a ticket to space. “
___
Artist Donna Levinstone

Donna Levinstone

Donna Levinstone, a native New Yorker, began her passion for art early on. My love of art surfaced at a very young age. Spending endless hours wrapped up in art projects are some of my most vivid childhood memories. Levinstone was drawn to the sky from the very start. The beauty of the sky has always held something very special for me. From rides in our family convertible to summer vacations at the shore, my fascination with the sky was always there. It is this sky that immediately draws you into her work. You are beckoned by the intensity of the changing colors of nature. The light and atmosphere set the tone for her work.

Levinstone’s early work consists of impressionistic landscapes done in acrylic paint. Having studied at both SUNY in Stony Brook, New York and the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, she continued her artistic journey into painting photo-realistic landscapes. It is the combination of the two that is incorporated into her most recent work, creating a photo-impressionistic style. Working with handmade pastels, her landscapes convey a traditional yet contemporary feel.

Donna Levinstone’s pastel drawings have been featured in many museums, galleries and private collections around the world.  For this exhibit her pastel cityscapes will be featured.  Donna Levinstone’s work will also be featured this fall in the inaugural art exhibit at THe 9/11 Museum and Memorial.

___

Artist Eduardo Anievas

Eduardo Anievas

Eduardo Anievas Cortines’ paintings approach different subjects: figure, cityscape, landscape, abstractions, still lifes, and portraits. Central in much of Eduardo’s work is the interplay between figure and background, using the figure as negative space to contextualize an abstracted, geometric background which becomes the subject of the painting. His figures are shaped by gesture and his geometry sometimes suggests an environment but is often pure abstraction. Eduardo was born in Santander, a city on the north coast of Spain, in 1973. He earned a Master’s degree in fine art from the University of Fine Arts in Salamanca in 1996 and then moved to Passau, Germany and began his life as a full-time artist, selling still lives of flowers and fruits and painting portraits by commission. After a year in Portugal and a sojourn to China and Tibet, Eduardo moved to New York City. His paintings have been exhibited in the United States, Spain, Germany, Bulgaria and Portugal. In New York, Eduardo has exhibited in galleries, cultural centers, restaurants, nightclubs, on the streets of Manhattan and in his Open Studio Series in Long Island City, Queens.

Artist Eleanor Rahim

Eleanor Rahim

Eleanor was born in London. Always drawing and painting as a child, she eventually went on to obtain a Foundation Course in Art and Design and a BA (Hons) Graphic Design.  Since relocating to New York City in 2007, she has been recognized by the Art Students League of New York and was awarded the prestigious Red Dot Commendation in her first group show.  Eleanor is proud to have studied with color field abstract painter Ronnie Landfield at the League and figurative artist Jon DeMartin at the classical atelier, Grand Central Academy of Art.

The power and glory of our environment, both creative and destructive, inspire me to express what I see and feel through my abstract paintings. It is my desire to evoke a positive feeling and sense of peace in what can be a troubled world both socially and politically. Motion, flow, energy, balance, grace. Those instinctive elements, apparent in my abstract paintings, are key components of my figurative works. I am fascinated by the engineering and design embodied in the human form. Continuous classical study as a foundation combined with my instinct for freedom of expression has found its way into my figurative work. The challenge and excitement for me is to capture the energy, sensuality, spirit and movement of the form as my passions dictate.
