The “High Desert” theme developed out of my interest in the way architecture interacts with the landscape in the High Desert area in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The choices made by designers for the luxury homes in the area are often more stylized versions of the traditional “Southwestern Style”, with modern angles, large windows to view the breathtaking scenery, and swimming pools that defy the drying desert heat. I used to drive around the winding streets of the community, scouting for the perfect plot of land and fantasizing about the design of the home I would put there, along with all of it’s intricate details and features. Later all of this would come in handy, as I ended up using several locations for my forays into film and television – most notably the house of the character Hank Schrader in theEmmy-winning television series Breaking Bad.
The theme has be used in a number of paintings and etchings, each with subtle (or occasionally striking) variations, paralleling the actual construction that takes place there. They have been collected around the world, and I often attach the location of the collection to the name of each piece sold. Here are a couple of examples:
