Communication is a basic human need, and the desire to be understood is universal. The sharing of a feeling, thought or observation with another provides a sense of validation and security, the opposite of which is a feeling of isolation or disconnection from the surrounding world. When traditional means of communication are ineffective, the desire to spread the message grows stronger.
Every person contains a wealth of experience and a shared desire to make sense of it all in order to find their place in the world, a place where they feel happy. Traditionally the act of placing a message in a bottle and casting it into the sea required a certain amount of hope that the message would even be received by someone who would act on it, and that same hope is often necessary today, even in the age of mass-communication.
In the painting, “Message in a Bottle”, the lone figure on the rocky outcropping can be viewed in terms of the container that holds both the message and the hope that it will one day be heard.
